History of the schoolThe first dependents' school was opened in the classrooms of the Heidelberg University on October 20, 1946. Combined enrollment for the elementary and high school was 110 students, but it increased rapidly and by December it was necessary to open a dormitory for students from Stuttgart. In September 1947, another increase in enrollment necessitated a move to the Bunsen Schule in Neuenheim, which had been built with funds donated by the inventor of the Bunsen Burner, Robert Wilhelm Eberhard Bunsen. One wing of this school was used for four years. The girls' dormitory was located in a private home; the boys' dormitory in the school building; and cafeteria facilities on the ground floor. In June 1947, the graduation exercises were held in the Konigssaal at the Heidelberg Schloss, initiating a long tradition. It was also in 1947 that Heidelberg High School was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The combined elementary and high school building as they existed in 1972, with a separate dormitory, was opened in 1952. An annex to this was constructed and completed by February 1954. In June 1955, the dormitory was closed. In 1972, Heidelberg High School enrolled only the children of military personnel and civilians residing in the Heidelberg area. Combined enrollment for the Junior High and High School for the 1970's was approximately 1200 students.
